Item Description
Size: 8in x 10in
Media: Stained glass, glass tile, seed beads, glass beads, iridescent glass & beads, reclaimed jewelry pieces, clay tile, and millefiori. I have also used a ‘found’ piece of shell for the elephant’s ear.
Artist Statement:
An elephant is reputed to be ‘lucky’ if his trunk is raised. Here, he is bedecked in all his finery, playing his part in a festival, proudly standing with his trunk raised amidst the celebratory decorations, bestowing his luck on all who see him!
Bio:
Having spent my formative years in schooling and then working in Plymouth, my partner and I decided we’d like to see a bit of the world, so we settled our affairs, bought a camper van and off we went on our adventure. During that time we experienced many different cultures including those in Thailand, India, Egypt and Israel. Later we settled in Staverton, and this is where we still live.
Always having an interest in crafts & arts I was by that time making jewelry using semi-precious stones and became drawn to the art of mosaic. I gradually taught myself the techniques and skills involved and for the last six years have been creating mosaics which have been exhibited in Plymouth, Totnes, Exeter and America. I also had a successful solo exhibition in Totnes in 2008 entitled ‘A Journey Through Colour and Texture”. I was also recently very pleased to receive a ‘highly commended’ for my mosaic ‘confused – yes I am’, in an online competition for which one of the judges was the world famous mosaic artist Martin Cheek.
My inspiration initially came from the artwork of the diverse cultures I had been exposed to whilst traveling. Colours are a huge inspiration and I love bold bright hues. More recently I have been drawn to mixed media mosaics, as I really enjoy including different textures, levels, depths and materials in my art. I also love materials that ‘play with light’ and try to include refraction and iridescence wherever possible.
I enjoy creating both geometric/abstract pieces and more figurative representations. I have also crafted outdoor sculptures, tables and birdbaths and welcome commissions.
