Serge B. Samovar: a Moscow Lawyer
A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD/A NIGHT IN THE UKRAINE
1980
This dashing bear recreates the Moscow lawyer portrayed by David Garrison in the second act of A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine. Based on Anton Chekov’s one-act play The Bear (appropriately enough), A Night in the Ukraine, dubbed “the film the Marx Brothers never made,” is set in the stately mansion of Ukrainian widow Mrs. Pavlenko and introduces us to the slapstick comedic antics of the Marx Brothers. Serge bear arrives on the scene decked out in the familiar style of Groucho Marx. He wears a white cotton shirt under a black gabardine dinner jacket and grey gabardine pinstriped trousers. His grey striped silk tie completes the ensemble. And what representation of Groucho would be complete without the trademark greasepaint moustache and eyebrows. The hair was created from black faux fur and Serge B. Samovar is accessorized, of course, with 14-karat gold antique eyeglasses and Groucho’s infamous cigar. Whether “monkey-ing” around your business or attending a “Day at the Races,” this bear is enough to make anyone go “Coconuts!”
