Item Description

Madame Armfeldt
A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC
2009 Revival

Madame Armfeldt’s costume from her “Liaisons” scene consists of a separate bodice and skirt in black satin. The front insert of the bodice is tightly gathered and is flanked on both sides by two rows of different trims, adorned with shiny bugle beads and other black beads. The back closure of the form-fitting bodice is grommeted and laced. The lapel, which extends from the nape to slightly below the waist, is also encrusted with beads and bugle beads to create a leaf and flower motif, as in the original. To recreate this design, a ready-made trim was meticulously cut into pieces, rearranged, and glued into place. Bugle beads also highlight the outer edges of the stand up collar, which is topped with a white, scalloped, lace trim. The white lace is repeated on the hems of the sleeves, which get their “poof” from inserting a gathered piece of net into the sleeve caps. The skirt is generously draped in the back, sides and front, which is force gathered with three knotted bands. Her cameo was created with three disparate elements: a gold metal jewelry disk, pearls surrounding the edges and a small cameo figure. The silhouetted face is highlighted by hand with a fine-point marking pen and the black lace peaking out from under the sleeves simulates Madame Armfeldt’s fingerless gloves. Simple leather shoes complete the costume.
