THE GIRL WHO CAME TO SUPPER
1963
You’ve all heard about the man who came to dinner and the guest who wouldn’t leave, but what about the girl who came to supper? Well, she was the title character in the appropriately titled The Girl Who Came to Supper, a charming 1963 Noël Coward musical based on the Terrence Rattigan play The Sleeping Prince. The girl in question is Mary Morgan, played by musical comedy star and future television mom Florence Henderson. In a show-stopping number, Mary does a one-woman version of the operetta-within-the-operetta called The Coconut Girl. The dress worn by our Mary is a facsimile of the original. The 1911-style hobble-skirt confection has an under-layer of re-embroidered lace spangled with hand-sewn sequins and beads. Her crème silk crepe de chine over-skirt is literally dripping in pearl dangles and features a double row of pearl fringe at the hem. The goddess style bodice has a one-shouldered bias cut and is closed with tiny silk-covered buttons. Her blonde hair is upswept with matching pearl clips, while her custom cream silk satin spool-heeled pumps give a touch of elegance – enough elegance, one presumes, to allow our gal to stay for supper!
