Mabel Normand
MACK & MABEL
1974
Jumpin’ St. Jude, look what happened to Mabel! Bear designer Zoë Morsette recreates a scene from the Jerry Herman musical in which silent movie director Mack Sennett directs his star, Mabel Normand, in a western. Astride a fake horse in front of moving scenery, Mabel wears a homespun pioneer outfit, starting with black tights and white cotton bloomers. Her red plaid blouse with rolled-up sleeves has a white woven collar blanket stitched in black-pearled snaps and a black shoelace tie. Her blue yoked skirt is overlaid with a yellow plaid apron. Thick ribbed socks peek over the tops of her brown leather lace-up boots. And no cow-bear would be complete without a 10-gallon hat and pearl-handled six-shooter. The riveted leather holster and sculpted miniature pistol are both embellished with faux western tooling.
Mabel’s trusty steed is sculpted from EVA foam and covered in piebald fake fur, just like the original, while the tail is made from real horsehair. A theatrically aged wooden platform keeps Mabel steady as she appears to hang on for dear life. When it comes time to bid, don’t be silent like our little heroine, but raise your hand high, high, HIGH, just like Mabel’s!
