THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
2010 Revival
“If you prick us, do we not bleed? asks the miserly Shylock in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. Well luckily, if you prick our Shylock bear he won’t bleed all over this terrific design from Jess Goldstein for the 2010 Broadway revival starring Al Pacino. Both his mid-length frock coat and pants are made from charcoal wool flannel, while his black-on-black brocade vest fits over his white cotton broadcloth shirt. His wealth is flaunted by a gold watch chain with its Star of David pendant and his black, silky velvet yarmulke. The cotton string braids hanging underneath his coat represent tzitzit, specially knotted ritual fringes that traditionally are attached to a Jewish prayer shawl. Included with the bear is additional yarn used to create the tzitzit on Broadway. The costume is finished off with black leather oxford shoes.
