Eliza Doolittle
MY FAIR LADY
1956
Yes it was PINK! For the trip to Ascot Racecourse in the original Broadway production of My Fair Lady, costume designer Cecil Beaton created a pink dress for leading lady Julie Andrews. Everyone else was in black and white, but Eliza Doolittle was pretty in pink! Our Eliza bear wears a hand-pleated silk organza dress with a pink silk satin underdress. The dress features sheer sleeves with circular ruffles at the cuffs, and a ruched organza sash with a large corsage of pink silk flowers. Her huge picture hat in the style reminiscent of 1910 is in matching sun-ray pleated organza on a wire base trimmed with the same vintage pink silk flowers. She carries a matching ruffled organza muff and parasol. Her custom spool-heeled shoes are covered with pink silk satin and are entirely handmade. She is lovingly blushed and is coiffed in Miss Andrews’ signature 1956 spit curl look. “Wouldn’t It be Loverly” to take our Eliza Doolittle bear home?
