Joanne Jefferson
RENT
1996
“…You bettah’ take her for what she is, baby!” Tracie Thoms portrayed Joanne Jefferson in both the final cast of Rent on Broadway and the 2005 feature film, and her ursine doppelganger’s costume and hair are an exact replica of the originals from the show. Cut from pieces of the originals, Joanne’s costume is comprised of a black striped-knot body suit that snaps between the legs, with contrasting black-and-white trim along the neckline. Her twill tuxedo pants fasten in the front with a hook-and-eye and sport a satin stripe down each pant leg. She wears black Doc Martens boots on her tiny feet and sports elegant crystal studs in her ears. During intermission, Tracie always had her signature twisted hair pulled back into six French twists before Act II. The bear has an exacting hair-do, dyed in three shades to match Tracie’s, and replicated with the assistance of Tracie herself.
