Indian of The Dawn
THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES
1991
In foreshadowing his founding of the popular Broadway Cares burlesque fundraiser Broadway Bares, Jerry Mitchell danced nearly naked on top of a giant drum in the 1991 Tony Ward-winning Best Musical The Will Rogers Follies. In a scene from one of the Ziegfeld Follies numbers, Jerry appeared as the Indian of the Dawn, dressed only in a loin cloth and feather headdress, giving us a taste of his future choreographic achievements. This special edition smaller-sized bear has been formed to match Mitchell’s worked-out physique and naked bottom, and comes with a strategically placed hand-painted loin cloth. The magnificent headdress is shaped like a Mohawk and contains real feathers with dyed tips, red boa accents and metallic string for added height. The headdress is held on by red leather straps that are decorated with crystals. Matching wrist and ankle straps are also made from red leather and are covered with more feathers and jingle bells. Our Indian Bear of the Dawn stands atop his very own drum, hands raised high – perhaps he is bidding on himself!
