Fruitlands Museum’s mission is to inspire and educate through the heritage, nature, and art of New England. Fruitlands rests on over 200 acres of land, with 3 miles of walking trails for guests to enjoy. The museum consists of 4 main galleries - the Fruitlands Farmhouse, Art Gallery, Native American Gallery, and the Shaker Office.

The Fruitlands Farmhouse was home to Bronson Alcott from June 1843 to January 1844. Alcott, an educator and philosopher whose Temple School in Boston gained him international fame, believed childhood education must be moral, intellectual, spiritual and physical. At Fruitlands, Alcott was able to withdraw from institutions and social structures for a much needed retreat and to explore the relationships between individuals and their world. |
Fruitlands Museum’s fine art collection contains over 100 Hudson River School landscape paintings, more than 230 19th century vernacular portraits, textiles, documents, works on paper, and more. Early 19th century vernacular portraits illustrate rural New Englanders and the bonds that held communities together. |
Fruitlands’ Native American collection includes over 1000 ethnographic objects divided between New England, the Plains, Southwest, and Northwest Coast culture areas. Since its inception, Fruitlands collaborates with Native Americans, scholars and conservators to interpret and care for its Native American collection. |
Our Shaker Office, built in 1796 as an office, and moved to Fruitlands Museums in 1920 by founder, Clara Sears, after the Harvard Shaker village closed, contains exhibits on the nearby Harvard and Shirley Shaker communities founded by Ann Lee and her followers in 1781. |
