Item Description
Tillie’s is named in the memory of Tillie Asnis, who ran a dry cleaning store at 248 DeKalb in the 40s and 50s, and who lived with her family above the store for many years. She is pictured here in a photo from the 1940s. Other members of the Asnis family ran bicycle and locksmith businesses here. The coffee house was named in Tillie’s honor so that the store would seem as though it had been there for years from the day the doors opened.
Offering the finest in teas, coffees, French pastries and baked goods as well as bagels and "light fare" such as sandwiches and quiche, Tillie’s also features New York egg creams, Boylan’s sodas, smoothies, Italian sodas, organic fruit drinks, and other special treats.
Tillie’s is a contemporary update on the corner neighborhood hangout, offering a little bit of small town hospitality in the big city. It is also a place to showcase local talent, offering new shows by area artists every six weeks or so, Open Mic nights every other Thursday, and frequent performances by local musicians and spoken word artists.
