Item Description
One of California’s first woman winemakers, Merry Edwards began her career at Mount Eden Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1974. She went on to become the founding winemaker at Matanzas Creek in 1977 and remained there until 1984. For the next decade, Merry consulted for numerous wineries, large and small, in Oregon and many diverse appellations of California. In 1997, family and friends joined Merry to found Merry Edwards Winery, with a focus on producing Pinot Noirs with a sense of place from Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast. Living her dream, she and her husband, Ken Coopersmith, now manage five estate vineyards: Coopersmith, Cresta d’Oro, Flax, Georganne and Meredith. They maintain collaborative relationships with several other dedicated growers to supplement this estate production.
About this Pinot Noir: Grapes from the Sonoma Coast appellation gives the opportunity to create a blend unique in its cool-climate profile. For this wine, Merry Edwards sources from vineyards located to the south and west of the town of Sebastopol. These sites are directly influenced by fog and breezes emanating from San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Primarily planted to the new generation of Dijon clones, these vineyards also host a small proportion of two older California selections - Pommard and Swan.
The opening fragrance of this Pinot reveals scents of crushed, sweet red cherries, ripe raspberries and jasmine tea. As the appealing aroma expands and unfolds, its floral perfume exhibits hints of violets, blueberries, licorice and nutmeg. The palate is sweet and savory with a smooth, sleek mouthfeel and fine-grained tannins extending the full finish. This wine’s gentle, approachable character belies its potential for long-term aging.
This offer: One signed magnum 2008 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast.
