Item Special Note
Victoria Calabro split her childhood between Texas and Saudi Arabia and her work channels the topography of her youth by conceiving a theatrical desert tableau. Working mainly in installations, her sculptural work presents cast glass, metal, plastics and rubber arranged in an unusual way. While many of the sculptures appear to be malleable, they are, in fact confined to their wilted poses. The intent of her work is to poke fun at the masculinity of the Western world. Often using carpet and colored sand as a stand-in for ground, these materials also create a flat horizon line making a clear distinction between the ground and the wall. The variety of materials provide a contrast both visually and conceptually—incongruous, yet oddly at home. Taking cues from surrealism, minimalism, post-minimalism and pop, the she often merges a formal graphic composition with a healthy dose of humor.
