Item Special Note
Since 1994 Monica Guggisberg and Philip Baldwin have been combining Italian cold-worked cutting techniques with Swedish blown glass color underlay and overlay. Originally inspired by Carlo Scarpa’s work with Venini in the 1930s and 40s, the pair has taken battuto where no one else has gone. Cutting through thin layers of color reveals more colors underneath, weaving pattern and color on the one hand and form and texture on the other. The vessel is a laboratory for new combinations in color and subtleties of form. It may reflect images and impressions found elsewhere in the world, in walls, urban landscapes, a river flowing downstream, twilight, dreams, as well as pure abstraction of geometry and color.
