Item Special Note
Jeff Zimmer is fascinated by exploring areas between certainty and doubt, conveying a sense of the volume of space, and impeding the flow of light.
In Jonah and the Whale, a man sits on a miniature stage alone in a basement, draining the dregs of a bottle of wine. Is he consuming or being consumed by it? As a seemingly limitless supply of bottles stretches deep into the earth, the work suggests both their fates are to be consumed. The world is in his reach in the illusory form of a globe-shaped bar at his elbow; however, in his underground retreat he has already been symbolically devoured by the real world. He is landlocked but his sparsely decorated room contains only items suggesting the sea. The opening scene from the film Jaws appears on his television. Even the flying ducks on his wall seem to be preparing to attack. The theater shell is papered with images from medieval “dances with death,” a “mouth of hell” and images from horror films of characters being dragged under.
Living in Edinburgh, UK, Zimmer has pieces in the permanent collections of Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, Denmark; North Lands Creative Glass, Lybster, UK;and Pollock's Toy Museum, London, UK. It is his first time being featured in an UrbanGlass Auction.
