Item Description

This class will be held one afternoon a week over four weeks during the month of October 2011 and taught by Trey Lathe at his home. He's had lifelong experience in cooking for family and others and has taught this class previously (with encore demands :)).

Day 1: Seeds! Your children will learn about the seeds we eat and where they come from, nuts, grains and legumes. They'll learn about the different ways to prepare them healthily. They'll have hands-on experience in making bread.

Day 2: Vegetables! Your children will learn about vegetables, where they come from and healthy and tasty ways to prepare them. They'll experiment with their favorite vegetables to find out the best way to prepare them.

Day 3: Fruits! Your children will learn about fruits and the different types of fruit (and we'll hold a debate about the difference between fruits and vegetables!). They'll learn the difference between a cobbler and a crisp and they will make a crisp from their favorite fruit with a simple flexible recipe.

Day 4: Food from Animals! Your children will learn about the different foods we get from animals, eggs, milk, honey and meat. We'll learn healthy ways to prepare meat and will experiment with different kind of fish and marinades to find their favorite recipe.

The class will conclude with a dinner the children prepare for all the parents!

Transportation to and from cooking class will have to be worked out by parents.

Appropriate age for this class are entering 2nd graders to entering 4th graders, though willing to work with older kids too.
