Item Description

Spend a day shadowing one or two faculty members (depending upon availability) with Emory's Center for Mind, Brain, and Culture (CMBC). Professor Laura Namy in the Department of Psychology at Emory University is the Associate Director of the CMBC. Dr. Namy, an experimental and developmental psychologist, studies how young children learn language. She has published many prominent papers on very young children's word learning and other symbolic abilities, such as signing. Professor Robert N. McCauley, Director of the CMBC, is a philosopher of science who specializes in the philosophy of psychology and the connections between cognition and culture. He has published influential articles and books in both areas. In addition to the opportunity to meet with Professors Namy and McCauley, the day will involve opportunities to visit both the CMBC and Dr. Namy's laboratory. It will also probably include one or more of the following: opportunities to observe one or both of Professors Namy and McCauley teaching undergraduate or graduate courses, participating in research group meetings, or supervising or carrying out psychological experiments. The CMBC fosters inquiry, research, and teaching from multiple explanatory perspectives concerning issues and phenomena associated with mind, brain, and culture and their relations. The Center's mission is to facilitate inter-disciplinary dialogue and collaboration among faculty and students at Emory from a variety of different research approaches including (but not limited to) neuroscientific, cognitive, developmental, evolutionary, comparative (across species), cultural, social, linguistic, and computational.
