Background and tie-in
In the summer of 1965 Jacques Pepin, along with Pierre Franey (head chef at Le Pavillon), Craig Claiborn (food editor, NY Times), Roger Fessaguet (La Caravelle), Jean Vergnes (Le Colony) and Rene Verdon (White House) held the “Grandest Picnic of All Time” at the privately held Gardiner’s Island, off the coast of East Hampton, NY. The food had three distinct characteristics:
1. Extremely fresh - most of the fish was caught just before cooking.
2. Hyer-local - most of the fruit and produce was grown on the island.
3. Expertly created - the feast was prepared by top chefs.
Ohio’s rendition is not intended to mirror Jacques’ “Grandest Picnic”, but is instead a modernized and localized reflection, held in a similarly awe-inspiring location.
Item Special Note
