Item Description
Title: “Doubloon Sail Boat”
Medium: Hand-carved from mahogany and tropical cedar
Size: 12” W x 5-1/2” D x 22” H
Additional Information: This stunning one-of-a-kind wood carving, expertly crafted from top-quality tropical cedar and mahogany, is a showcase for the skills of a one-time master boat-builder, Robert Wright of Jamaica. Of special note is Wright’s perfectionist approach to his craft, particularly his ability to capture the loose, flowing movement of the boat’s sails using an inflexible wood. The boat’s two sails are each made from a single piece of wood—and held together with a wooden peg. Wright’s trademark dolphin moniker appears prominently on the side of the boat’s hull, identifying this piece as a Wright carving. This incredible boat would look handsome almost anywhere in a home or office setting.
About the Artist: Robert Wright is an accomplished artist living in Treasure Beach, Jamaica—a small fishing village on the South Coast of Jamaica; he has had a love of boats and boating all his life. He was born in Jamaica but learned his carpentry and boat-building skills working first in the Cayman Islands, then in Anguilla. His interest in wood as an artistic medium spans three decades, and he is renowned for his meticulous and inspirational approach to breathing life and movement into the inanimate wood form. He currently combines his passion for woodcarving with that of gardening—and is also a respected garden designer.
