About the Artist: Kathe Kollwitz (1847-1945) was a remarkable German Expressionist printmaker and sculptor whose life was filled with great sorrow and hardship; she lost her youngest son in battle in World War I. She is regarded as one of the most important German artists of the 20th century, and her work is widely exhibited. There are two museums in Germany devoted solely to her work; and her pieces are in the collections of such prestigious public art galleries as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art.
