Item Description

"The beauty of this piece lies in the backstory.  I was struggling to capture, in one summarizing panel, the beauty of New Orleans, that there is no other place like it, and that one of the biggest reasons for that is music.  I wanted to convey something quiet and reflective, yet bright and hopeful for the future.  Something that lifts you up, like a corner brass band or a second line.  I finally just sat down one Saturday and sketched this out on a canvas without really thinking about it.  I felt so good about the outcome that I took a bike ride through Mid-City.  On the way back home, not an hour after I had drawn this scene, I saw it, or rather, I heard it.  I looked all around and saw one, single young man, walking down the street, wearing the jacket I'd drawn, practicing that beautiful brass beast of an instrument.  Serendipity is alive and well in New Orleans."

Piece measures 20" x 24", acrylic, oil paint pen, Mardi Gras beads on canvas.

About the artist:  Jill Ensley is a New Orleans-based artist and the Operations/Artistic Director at Tipitina's Foundation.  She earned her BFA from Kansas University and specializes in painting, photography, comic books, and soon, hopefully, children's books.  She loves this city fiercely.
