Item Description

From artist Nancy S. Kraus, bid now for this beautiful, one-of-a-kind hand dyed silk challah cover.

About the artist, in her own words:

From the moment I brushed my first dyes on silk, I was captivated by the medium. The luminescence of the dyes as they flowed onto the fabric grabbed me then and continues to pull me into my studio every day.

Although I studied to become a teacher and then a children's librarian, I also studied art in college and after and trained in children's book illustration with Uri Shulevitz. Having recently retired from thirty-five years of teaching and librarianship, I am most delighted to become a full time practicing artist.

While studying with Len Brondum, I was introduced to many silk painting techniques and continued studies with Susan Moyer and Betsy Sterling Benjamin. I enjoy making floral paintings and biblical scenes using linear under-painting and gutta resist, which you can see on my tallitot and paintings of key moments in the Torah. I use the Japanese wax resist technique called rozome to make scarves, capes, and paintings, and have used it on some tallitot.
