Item Description

The Original Pittsylvania County Flag was made by a Ladies Group around 1821.  It is thought to have been the only county flag for many years in the country.  It was sent with the Local Militia in the Civil War in 1861.  It was lost for some time.  In 1919 Maud Clement was doing research in the Library of Virginia and was shown the original flag which was in bad condition.  Through the efforts of her husband, The Honorable Nathaniel Clement, then a member of the House of Delegates, a bill was introduced and and passed in the Legislature to return the Flag to the County Seat. At the expense of the Board of Supervisors, the flag was returned to it's present beauty and placed on the walls of the Courthouse as a reminder to posterity of the courageous Pittsylvania soldiers of the old Forty-Second Regiment who served in the war of 1812 under the command of Colonial Daniel Coleman.

Around 1945 as a County Schools Fundraiser, 40 screen print replicas were made.  The Flag, donated by BB & T for this auction, is one of those 40.  The Chatham Historical Society also has a replica hanging in the Pittsylvania County's 1813 Clerk's Office behind Chatham Town Hall.
