Flora Kao lives and works in Los Angeles. In her paintings, Kao obsessively layers grids - taken from street blocks, floor plans and electronic spreadsheets – and transforms such human attempts to organize the world into atmospheric landscapes and intricate tapestries. Ultimately, she seeks to inspire a heightened awareness of our relationship to technology and environment.
"My art responds to the frenetic intensity and psychological isolation of contemporary urban life. Overloaded by information and institutional demands, we spend much of our lives trapped in generic spaces executing mundane routines.”
She received her BA in Environmental Science and Public Policy from Harvard College and her BFA from Otis College of Art and Design.
