Item Description

Footed dish with squirrel head, signed. Authentic hand thrown pottery made from all natural materials in the tradition of the Chorotega Indians, handed down for over 800 years from generation to generation of artisans of the community of Guaitil, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The pottery making supports the entire village, and all family members learn the craft. The pots are thrown completely by the artisan's hands - no foot pedal or electricity is used. Black, tan and red ochre sands are collected from three different mountains to make the clays. The intricate designs carved into the surface of each unique piece are inspired by the local forest and wildlife. (9 inches).
