Item Description
In the Vineyard: Since 1996, we have sourced fruit from Dick Shea’s reputable vineyard. It is one of the early vineyards to be planted in this district. Shea Vineyard has been recognized by the US Department of Agriculture's Conservation Security Program, that identifies farming practices that meet high levels of conservation and environmental management standards. As with previous vintages, the fruit in 2009 came exclusively from Block 11’s clone 115, and this year was harvested on the first of October at around 25.5 Brix, pH of 3.5 and TA of 5g/L.
At the Winery: The fruit was hand-sorted and destemmed into one-and-a-halfton fermenters. After nearly a week-long cold soak, some of the ferments were inoculated with BM45 yeast while others finished fermentation naturally. All reached peak fermentation temperatures of around 86ºF. With three weeks of skin contact the wine was pressed and racked to barrel, inoculated for malolactic fermentation, and aged for ten months in French oak. A final selection of nine barrels was chosen to comprise this vineyard designate wine, employing subtle oak intensity of one new, one 1-year-old, two 2-year-old and the remaining all neutral barrels. The cooperages included were namely Remond, Ermitage and Cadus.
At the Table: A vibrant, velvet-red wine with subtle purple hues that reveal dusty crushed rose petal aromas followed by ripe strawberries, red raspberries and fresh-cut sweet clover hay. The palate shows juicy concentrated cherry and pomegranate fruit with earthy tobacco and licorice notes, all held together with lingering, rich, suede-like tannins.
