Item Description
Deep in the land of Shangri La lies one of the most beautiful and sacred mountains in the world, Mt. Kailas. Every year thousands of pilgrims of the Buddhist, Hindu, and ancient Bon religion trek across the high desert altiplano of Tibet to circumambulate the mountain, gaining untold blessings as they do so. Julie Masterson traveled with them at a time when few Westerners had seen, yet alone photographed, the holy route. This image from her trip, taken at over 18,000 feet above sea level, shows one of the last surviving monasteries on the Pilgrim Trail. Just two monks remain in residence. What can they be thinking, as they contemplate the eternal snows of the mountain's summit reaching into a cobalt sky? This 16" x 20" Cibachrome photograph, with archival matte and frame, shows the scene as she saw it, unmanipulated, in the tradition of Julie's mentor, Ansel Adams.
