Item Description
This 7 1/2" x 21" signed sculpture was purchased for $150 in the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Harare, in 1987, the likely year of its creation. For this early work,Tshuma used wood from the Iminyela tree (Commiphora Mossambicensis) to depict in naive simplicity the outcome of the Biblical story of Daniel in the Lion's Den. The sculpture shows, on one side, Daniel embracing the lions, and on the other, a lion with a bone of one of King Darius' corrupt administrators in his mouth. The colors of this gently painted piece were created by using potash which gives a beautiful soft matte finish. During the initial years of the AIDS epidemic in Zimbabwe, Tshuma was a forerunner, becoming very well known for creating an awareness of the disease through the graphic depictions in his sculptures. His work was particularly sought after in Europe and is found in many private collections around the world. Add it to your collection, or start one now with this one-of-a-kind piece!
