Item Description

Two vintage French wines from the Cellars of wine distributor Warner Henry make up this selection: a red Rhone 1983 Chatenauneuf du Pape, and a 1997 white Burgundy from Buchard Pere & Fils Les Pucelles. Rarely available other than from a private collection!! Beaucastel is perhaps the most famous estate in the southern Rhone Valley. It is regarded by many as one of the top estates, if not the top estate, of Chateauneuf du Pape wine, producing wild, complex and age worthy Chateauneufs that sometimes include all 13 permitted grape varieties. With their animal, vegetal and mineral aspects, these wines can seem virtually to be alive. The Rhone wines offer a richer mouth feel, a more roasted and sometimes liqueur-like fruit character, and notes of wild herbs and spices. Alcohol levels of 15% or higher are not uncommon in the ripest vintages. Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape 1983 is loaded with fruit on the nose, with an edge of wet pebbles and stones. This wine seems so young! If you didn't know this was a wine from the early 1980s you would have thought it about five years old just on the nose. The palate doesn't really alter this impression, with plenty of rich and smoky black and red fruits. It is quite tightly held together, although smooth and finely textured, with balanced acidity This wine has years ahead of it. While Burgundy is renowned as the home of Pinot Noir, it is also the source for the ubiquitous Chardonnay grape. In these gently rolling hills Chardonnay achieves some of its most profound expressions. With a richness and complexity few wines can match, Chardonnay from Burgundy can proudly take their place among the most sought-after in all the world of wine. Burgundy Bouchard Les Pucelles 1997 has a distinctive bouquet with beautiful toasty notes. A subtle and rich wine. Excellent with seafood! White Burgundy can improve in the bottle for decades and is arguably the most age-worthy dry white wine in the world. At its best, white Burgundy is the greatest and most long-lived expression of the Chardonnay grape, combining complex smoky, toasty, buttery, nutty and mineralic elements with firm acidity that holds everything together.
