Gift certificate for an overnight stay for two people at The Island Inn on Monhegan Island. Double occupancy, includes full breakfast. Valid for 2011 and 2012 seasons. Excludes Saturday night stays and excludes the high season (July 1 through early September inclusive). Must call for reservations. Gratuities not included.

ABOUT THE INN

The Inn sits atop a bluff looking west over Monhegan harbor, toward the ocean and provides a perfect location to view the dramatic sunsets and the magnificent colors that accompany them. Monhegan is located 10 miles of the coast of Maine, at latitude 43 degrees 46 minutes and longitude 69 degrees 19 minutes. The Inn, which dates from 1840, provides 32 rooms and suites, the majority with private bathroom but still a few with shared bathroom, all newly refurnished in a period sympathetic to the period and to the island.

There is plenty of space to sit and relax in a rocking chair on the porch or in an Adirondack on the lawn, both looking over the water, and there are cozy sitting rooms inside if the ocean breezes are too cool.

A full breakfast is included and the dining room has gained an excellent reputation for its food which concentrates on local seafood's and produce served during the evening hours. The Barnacle is open all day for coffees, sandwiches and baked goods, for picnics, lunches, mid morning snacks and afternoon refreshments. It also provides an opportunity to purchase gifts, cards, hats, T-shirts and various other enticing products.

The main building dates from 1816, when it was known as the Pink House, and then extended in 1907 to satisfy the need of the increasing number of visitors to Monhegan. It was extended again in 1910 to form the Island Inn as it is seen today. Its architecture represents a classic turn of the century style of summer hotel much reproduced in the early part of the 20th century but rarely found today. The Pierce Cottage, which sits on the meadow road and looks toward the lighthouse, with beautiful views of the island, was added to the property in 1924 by the Tribler sisters who took over the Inn that year from Frank Pierce who purchased the Pink House in 1906 and began the story of the Island Inn.

In order to make your stay more comfortable we suggest that you bring a great pair of walking shoes or hiking boots, binoculars, a flashlight, a windbreaker and sweater, your camera and a spare battery, and thermal underwear for the cooler ends of the season!

All items and gift certificates may be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce office on One Park Drive in Rockland. Gift certificates will be mailed to the winners at no charge. If the winner is unable to pick up an item, it will be shipped to them and they will be responsible for all shipping and handling fees, which will be added to the winning bid amount. Items will be shipped and billed at standard industry rates.
