We are embarking on an extended 13-day expedition! Scheduled for September 8 - 20, 2011, right smack in the middle of the fall, we are preparing for a hammerhead craze and an unparalleled shark adventure.
Underwater - Cocos Island is both a Costa Rican National Park and a United Nations World Heritage Site. This island is a magnet for divers because of the walls of hammerhead sharks, white tips, galapagos, black tips, silver tips and even the occasional whale and tiger sharks.
Other underwater attractions are dolphin, turtles and schools of jack fish that are so thick they can block out sunlight entirely, until once again the light floods in as the school parts.
Topside the island is daunting, with sheer cliffs of green that plummet hundreds of feet into the ocean. Depending upon the season, circumnavigation of the island will often reveal over 300 waterfalls against the dramatic landscape.
Your Hosts Jay Ireland and Georgienne Bradley are pleased to host this trip. They bring their combined diving experience of over 3,000 dives at the island and will share information about the local natural history, secrets about getting the perfect shot and information about the current poaching challenges facing the island. Using their still and video images, Jay and Georgienne have fought to protect Cocos Island for over 20 years. They are currently working with the local park guards to develop better communication and create more transparency between the remote park guards and the rest of the world. Understanding the day to day poaching patterns and specific challenges will better position us to partner with the park guards to protect the island AND to monitor on site activities.
