Item Description

Many people have heard about the magic of bioluminescence, and now you can experience it for yourself.  Invite up to five guests to join you for an evening bioluminescence paddle on Tomales Bay with Point Reyes Outdoors. You and your guests will get a chance to discover the best natural light show in the area with seasoned guides who will outfit your trip.

Bioluminescence is a seasonal occurrence (Sept-Oct) that happens when a combination of conditions align. While we can see this chemical reaction on land in the form of fireflies, some mushrooms and worms, single-celled plankton found in the ocean and known as dinoflagellates also glow when disturbed. Tides, storms, swimming marine life, and passing ships can cause large numbers of plankton to produce light simultaneously. They are responsible for the phenomenon known as the milky sea, which causes the ocean to glow. In some cases, this glow is so bright that it interferes with marine navigation. When we kayak, our paddle strokes will disturb these tiny organisms and cause them to “light up” creating a spectacular show for us as we explore Tomales Bay and sea life. Bid today!
