Your trio starts with a 2006 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino. Rated 90 by Stephen Tanzer of Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, this is a bright deep red. It features sexy aromas and flavors of raspberry and musky tobacco, with wilder suggestions of leather, herbs and dried flowers. This is a suave, silky midweight, with a fine-grained texture and nicely integrated acidity. Finishes with broad, sweet tannins and very good length.
Next, savor a 2006 Bodegas Lan Rioja Crianza, rated #44 in Wine Spectator's "Top 100 of 2010," and rated 90 by Wine Spectator. Fresh and balanced, this red brims with cherry, spice and licorice, with light, firm tannins and vibrant acidity. The texture is generous yet delicate. Not heavy, but vivacious, it's delicious now through 2014. Only 200,000 cases were made, so you're sampling something quite special!
Finally, enjoy a 2007 Pahlmeyer Chardonnay Sonoma Coast, rated 95 by Robert Parker of Wine Advocate. For starters, the 2007 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast may be one of Pahlmeyer's finest Chardonnays to date (despite coming right on the heels of their two brilliant 2006 Chardonnays). Most of the fruit comes from the Ritchie Vineyard, a site from which Mark Aubert also produces incredible wines. This 1,600-case cuvee is fashioned from the old Wente and Mt. Eden clones. Like the finest California Chardonnays, it reveals a light greenish hue to its straw color in addition to a beautiful perfume of nectarines, brioche, subtle smoke, crushed rocks, and gobs of white peach and pineapple fruit. This full-bodied beauty should drink easily for 5-6 years.
Finishing out this oenophile delight is Ghirardelli chocolate and a vanilla-scented candle. Enjoy a feast for the palate and sense with the finest fruit of the vine!
