Artist Statement by Ellen Newell

I created my first woodblock print eleven years ago and instantly knew this was the direction my art would take.  Since that time, I have worked almost exclusively in that medium.

The piece that I donated is called “Chine Colle’” from my series “A Day in the Life of a Paper Doll.”  The series taps into the desire to be a part of the group and the insecurity of not always fitting in with others’ expectations of us or even the “one size fits all” mentality.  Paper dolls are handicapped when it comes to fitting in, especially in a physical way.  I wanted to answer the questions:  What happens to a paper doll as she goes through the day? Where would she go and how would she entertain herself?   She cannot bend or fold.  She cannot change positions.   How does she fit into a bed?  What is the most likely injury a paper doll will suffer?  How is that injury treated?  What would it be like to go through life wearing clothes that covered only your front and left your backside bare (and probably very cold)?   What happens if she jumps out of a paper airplane with only a napkin as a parachute?

I look for alternative answers for some serious questions.   By putting my paper doll through her paces, I ask the question:  “Who has the most difficulty fitting in?”   I think she does.
