Item Description
Here’s an acrylic collage on a vintage wooden plate. It’s 9” in diameter. Artist Jennifer Eil French is always inspired by the detritus of our culture and she draws imagery for her paintings from old magazines, text books, coloring books, catalogs, nature books, and junk mail. These elements are applied to vintage plaques and frames into loosely narrative collages. Patterns and details are painted in, resulting in an amalgam of surreal landscape, Victorian photograph, and medieval icon. These paintings are infused with a sense of narrative reminiscent of allegorical folktales; set somewhere between the Western American landscapes of her childhood and the mill towns of her current home. They are informed by the strange beauty she finds in the darker corners of history and in the odd specifics that coalesce from often repeated stories.
