Item Description

Enjoy this collection of three Buddhist-inspired works of poetry from Coffee House Press authors Sung Yung Shin, Lawson Inada, and Ed Bok Lee.

Skirt Full of Black by Sung Yung Shin employs the techniques of investigative poetry and collage to craft a nuanced, unique language for navigating the politics of gender, ethnicity, and identity. As she spins new myths from Christian and Buddhist traditions and bestows new connotations upon the characters of the Korean alphabet, she gives voice to the spiritual and cultural hunger of those caught between two worlds.

Lawson Inada's Drawing the Line about Heart Mountain Camp, a internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II, where a group of resisters drew the line—they refused to comply, on constitutional grounds—and wound up in federal prison. The author contemplates a simple line drawing of the Heart Mountain camp and revisits this moment of history with pain, pride, and thoughtful historical perspective.

Whorled by Ed Bok Lee strives to give a voice to those left out with words of loss and longing, confrontation and celebration. From gambling Buddhists at a Midwest Native American casino, to a Russian rave, Lee’s ever-wandering cultural and spiritual nomads struggle to make sense of what it means to be a citizen of an increasingly homeless world.

Coffee House Press, founded by Allan Kornblum, has grown from a poetry magazine and letterpress to one of the premier nonprofit literary publishers in the nation.
