Violin Project: Acrylic, Oils and Foil, (Mixed Medium) High Gloss Coating
My violin design is based upon the 1968 Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey, written by Arthur C. Clarke. The beginning visual of the film, “Dawn of Man”, depicts a rocky, desert landscape occupied by a few apelike humans where a large black monolith mysteriously appears. Seemingly placed there by a higher power, the object emits a source of higher intelligence onto the primates causing an evolutionary leap. The scene then pans to a lone primate examining a large bone, recognizing its use as a tool, or perhaps a weapon. At this moment the music ascends ("Also Sprach Zarathustra") and the bone is thrown into the sky transitioning from early man, to the future, where an orbital satellite begins the Space Odyssey.
Visually I have approached this instrument with key representational images. The monolith, abstract in nature, can be seen on the fingerboard and on the back of the violin. Centrally located is an ever-watchful representation of Hal 9000 the super computer. Aligned planets and space-like imagery travel around the violin and up the neck to the scroll, drawing the viewer closer to the depths of outer space. The white scroll serves as dual representation, first, the significance of the bone and second, the power of infinity.
2001: A Space Odyssey will always remain a story of diverse interpretation and I invite you to revisit this film to explore the mysteries of mankind and the universe.
