Item Description

Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" was written in 1801 as a declaration of love to one of his students, the Countess Giulietta Guicciardi.  She was willing to marry Beethoven but was forbidden to do so by her parents. After listening numerous times to this beautiful composition, I felt a sense of longing and sadness with that history in mind.  In 1836, after Beethoven's death, German music critic, Ludwig Rellstab wrote that the sonata reminded him of the reflected moonlight off Lake Lucerne. "Moonlight Sonata" became it's official title. I painted my violin in acrylics with multiple layers of rich blue hues and the portraits in a linear style. The front depicts a younger, confident Beethoven in front of a full moon above a lake. The back is a portrait of the musician as an older man, introspective, under a waning moon.
