Tatting (a technique for handcrafting a particularly durable lace constructed by a series of knots and loops) has been documented as far back as the early 19th century. This specific pattern was designed by a member of the Palmetto Tatter's Guild.
Arlene Medder has been tatting for more than twenty years and has won ribbons for her work entered at the North Carolina State Fair.
