Laura Seeley, Artist Biography
by Dana Yarger, Los Angeles based art dealer
As well as being an artist, Laura is the author and illustrator of several award-winning gift and children’s books, including The Book of Shadowboxes, The Magical Moonballs and New York Times best seller The Boy of Steel. “Over the years, at book signings, schools and art shows,” Laura says, “I’ve been surprised at how many times I’ve been asked, What do you do first, the words or the pictures?” “Well, the words, of course,” I’d think to myself. “How could it be any other way? How does one do the pictures for a story that’s not even writ- ten yet?” “Well, so much for what I thought,” Laura smiles “of late, it has been the other way. Currently I’m working on a book with a publisher, writing verses to go with images that I’ve already completed. (hint...It will be about cats.)” Cats, among the many subjects in her art, have become Laura’s star subjects. “And there are so many kinds, all spectacular, of course!” says Laura. “But I guess part of me feels there still aren’t enough kinds, because my cat images range from your normal tabbies and toms to cats with polka-dots and people eyes.” Her cat gallery, Feline Fantasies, has grown into a cat community. Currently, there are five categories (so to speak). The first, Poetry In Paint, portrays the slices of life through imagery and words. Each painting contains a hidden inspirational verse. The Show Cats is the newest category, the pedigree cats. The People Cats are the whimsical human-eyed cats, The Kitty Cats feature all kinds of pretty kitties, and The Story Cats are from Laura’s stories and books. Many of her cats will be in the upcoming book, The Tabby Tiger Talent Agency, a gift book for cat and art lovers. Sprinkled with hints of humor, it will feature notably talented cat characters; a cast of cat actors, singers, comedians, drama queens (and kings), models, movie stars, even carnal cats…for the naughty roles! The subtitle…“A Collection of all Kinds of Cool, Captivating, Crazy, Clever, Creatively Crafted, Kooky and Incredible Cast- worthy, Camera-friendly Cat Critters.” Another pending book is titled A Cat Never Tells. Images from this story include some of her most popular art. Laura’s paintings have been shown and sold in galleries in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New Orleans and her cats have graced the Royal Canin-supported San Diego Cat Fanciers Club poster. Prints and originals of her work have sold at shows, (including cat shows, of course) benefit events, in shops and online. Recently she began licensing her images for ceramic tiles, apparel, totes and various gift-oriented items. And she has started her own line of Picture Pendants, for necklaces and pin charms. “It’s a wonderful feeling to see people enjoying my art.” Says Laura.
