The Upper, South Fork of the Snake
"The Upper" starts at Palisades Dam and ends at the Conant Valley boat access. This section encompasses approximately 15 river miles. With 4 public boat ramps, the upper river is the most accessible. From the Irwin access, the river opens up as it meanders through Swan Valley. The side channels and the shallow riffles offer excellent wading opportunities and some of the best dry fly fishing on the river.
The Canyon, South Fork of the Snake
"The Canyon" is considered the section of the South Fork beginning at the Conant Valley boat access to the Byington boat access.
There are two public access in the canyon section Cottonwood and Wolf. The float from Conant to Cottonwood is about 15 miles so once you're in the canyon, you're in. The upper canyon has no other access. Natural Retreats Outfitters Snake River is able to offer guests a private access about 12 miles down from the Conant boat ramp so your day in the canyon is not rushed and you can experience some of the most beautiful country East Idaho has to offer. This stretch of river covers approximately 25.5 miles.
The Lower, South Fork of the Snake
"The Lower" South Fork of the Snake is considered the section from the Byington Bridge down to Menan. This is an area of the river that can be very dangerous. The lower end spreads back out and offers some great fishing. There are numerous diversions and side channels on the lower end. The "Lower Section" covers approximately 24 miles of river, and is noted for the brown trout population.
