Item Description
This photo shows Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche at the opening reception for his art installation at the LAICA Gallery in Los Angeles in 1980. After the event, the original transparency then spent the next 24 years for all intents and purposes missing. Photographer Don Farber was sure he'd asked permission to photograph Rinpoche, but was not sure if he'd actually done it. Over the years, he would look from time to time for the slides. Then, one day he decided to open a dust covered box buried away in his house and was thrilled to find a little slide box inside that said Trungpa on it! The photo had appeared just in time to be included in his book Portraits of Tibetan Buddhist Masters but has otherwise been seen and displayed very little.
Don Farber has been photographing Buddhist life since 1977 and has been contributing photography to Shambhala Sun practically since its beginning. His other books of photography include: Taking Refuge in L.A., Visions of Buddhist Life, Tibetan Buddhist Life, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
