Item Description
Hand-Made Ceramic Compost Pot made by NC artist, John Ransmeier.
Pot is 7.5" tall (9" at its highest - with lid) and roughly 8.75" in diameter.
John grew up in the mountains of North Carolina where his interest in clay began in high school. After a visit to the Penland School of Crafts and some ingenuity, John built his first kick wheel in 1970. From books he taught himself how to throw clay and make pots. During an apprenticeship with Gene Bunker, John worked in porcelain and concentrated in glaze reduction. After a year of study at the Kansas City Art Institute, he established his own home studio.
Still seeking to improve his craft, John received a BFA from Alfred University, NY in 1990. From there he pursued graduate studies at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. After returning to North Carolina in 1994, John built his first wood fire kiln.
Today, John continues to work from his home studio alongside his wife Anne-Marie and their four year old son Jesse. Over the years, John's work has spanned a wide spectrum of processes, clay bodies, glazes, and styles.
Regarding his work, John comments: "In the past, I have always tried to maintain precise control over surface and glaze. In reaction to that, I am now letting randomness play into my work. My goal is to keep enough freshness in my pieces to allow as many possibilities as possible to take shape."
