Wagner Family of Wines Premier Package: Mer Soliel Chardonnay 2008, Belle Glos Pinot Noir 2008 and Caymus Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

1.5 L Mer Soliel Chardonnay 2008 signed by Charlie Wagner II

Tasting Notes: Citrus driven nose. Hints of matchstick, pineapple, banana and coconut. Soft and round entry. Oak is apparent but not defining. Mid-palate goes on to reveal other layers of flavors—vanilla, lemon meringue pie, and again coconut. Finish is rich with viscosity that coats the mouth for minutes after your last sip.

1.5 L Belle Glos Pinot Noir 2008 signed by Joseph Wagner

Tasting Notes: Winemaking A 100% Pinot Noir brand concentrating on grapes grown in California's coolest climates. With good reason California is the home of many very special wines. Climate being the most important criteria for quality grapes, the state's climate was studied 30+ years ago by UC Davis, then divided into Regions (I - V) determined by the heat summation. All Belle Glos wines are 100% grown in Region I - which all critics state is the best region for Pinot Noir. It is the coolest region in the state that can support vines and ripen grapes.

1.5 L Caymus Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 signed by Chuck Wagner

Tasting Notes: Caymus stakes its reputation on the production of two Cabernets - "Napa Valley" and "Special Selection." From the onset, this winery concentrated on the production of Cabernet Sauvignon, which produces the most superlative wine in the Napa Valley region. Often considered "trendsetters" in the style of Napa Valley Cabernet, Caymus has continued to forge new techniques in both vineyards and winery. Through trial and error the winery has made cautious changes over the four decades in business. The Wagners farm 350 acres of vineyards at 14 separate locations throughout the prime lands of the Napa Valley. Caymus cabernet is produced from approximately 25% hillside fruit and 75% valley fruit.

About the Wagner Family of Wine:

The Wagner family legacy of winemaking has been carried on for three generations. The family’s deep roots of farming grapes and producing wine began in 1915 in the Napa Valley. Charlie F. Wagner and Lorna Belle Glos Wagner, along with their son, Chuck, established Caymus Vineyards in 1972. Chuck saw great potential for producing quality wines outside of the Napa Valley as well, and by 1988, Chuck began planting land in the Santa Lucia Highlands. This appellation, located in Monterey County, is along the cooler coastline, yielding early ripening for Chardonnay. Mer Soleil Chardonnay became the product of this quality chosen site, and has been run by Chuck’s eldest son, Charlie F. Wagner II, since 2001.

As a teenager, Charlie began making wine along side his father. Charlie and his brother Joe, winemaker of Belle Glos, grew up learning and carrying on the viticulture practices of the Wagner family. However, Charlie continually seeks innovation as he produces high quality Chardonnay. In 2006, he started a second Chardonnay label, Silver, which strayed away from the traditional barrel fermented Chardonnay. Silver is Charlie’s unoaked Chardonnay, fermented in cement vats and stainless steal tanks. Born and raised in the vineyards of Napa Valley, Charlie practically has wine in his blood. It is no surprise that he shares the passion of winemaking with his father and grandfather.

For the Wagners, it’s all about the farming. One important aspect of farming that the Wagners value is crop rotation. In Monterey County, Charlie farms 100 acres of lemons, some of which are the Meyer variety. The juicy, brilliant yellow fruit are sold through a local produce broker. The citrus aroma is often evident in the Mer Soleil and Silver Chardonnays, as the grapes and lemons are produced from the same soils and weather patterns. This is the result of the lemon orchards that surround the vineyards.
