Item Description

Possess a link top Ohio’s past with this 16x20 inch print of the Old Drover Trail, by local artist, Floyd Simpson of Belmont County.

Droving of livestock from pioneer Ohio to the East Coast markets was an economic factor that made it possible for the early settlers to get established on the frontier.  They were able to raise livestock successfully but found little local market for them.

Drovers took excess livestock from farms in eastern Ohio and walked the animals for 300 miles across the Alleghenies to Baltimore, Maryland.  Since Baltimore had an all weather port the animals often were butchered there and the meat loaded onto sawdust insulated ice holds in wooden sailing ships bound mostly for Europe but as far away as Australia. The Ohio droving era was from 1805 to about 1870.
