Item Description
Friends whom I met on the December 2000 Nation Cruise to the Carribean
subsequently invited me to travel with them to a conference in Cuba in
February 2001. As travel from Canada to Cuba was legal, I met them in
Montreal and we flew down to Havana. At that time, the Elian Gonzalez
incident was THE DOMINANT TOPIC and Havana was alive with news, signs
and t-shirts featuring his image.
As you may recall, after the Supreme Court refused to hear the case, and with the intervention of Janet Reno, Elian was taken at gunpoint by federal troops in Miami and returned to his father in Cuba. (There's a fascinating account of this incident on Wikipedia that mentions the outcome of the 2000 elections as having been a possible ramification.)
As for this item, I offered a young boy outside our hotel $20 if he could find me a "Save Elian" t-shirt and after about 3 days of promising "tomorrow...this afternoon...tonight" he came up with this one. It's hand screened, grey cotton, men's small, with a Havana, Cuba label. Barely worn.
