Item Description
Send Ocean Futures Society’s marine biologist and expedition team member Holly Lohuis to the Carpintaria Family School to share personal stories and educational lessons about our vital connection to and dependence on healthy oceans.
Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society sees a perfect opportunity to bring the excitement of ocean exploration and discovery into the classroom. Through the Ambassadors of the Environment (AOTE) in-classroom presentations, we use marine ecosystems such as the kelp forest and coral reefs as models to teach about ecology and sustainable living and to reinforce the concept that that the ocean supports all life on this planet.
The Carpinteria Family School is committed to enriching the students’ education with specialized instructors who instill in their students a sense of connection to the natural world. With the oceans under threat from many human-induced stresses, Ocean Futures Society feels the urgency to spend their resources at the local educational level, touching the hearts and minds of students, one classroom at a time.
Holly will present lessons based on the four ecological themes of our multi-day AOTE program to empower students to be apart of the solution of ocean conservation.
These themes are:
• Everything runs on Energy
• There is No Waste in Nature
• Biodiversity is Good
• Everything is Connected
All of our programs meet national and California state standards in life science, earth science and/or physical science and include follow-up activities the teachers can later use to reinforce the concepts discussed.
Holly will conclude her presentations with a discussion on what we can do in our daily lives to address the issues raised and how our actions today will affect the future.
Item Special Note
Winning bidder will not receive a tangible item but instead will sponsor one classroom outreach presentation by Holly Lohuis at the Carpintaria Family School in Carpintaria, California.
