About Chateau Gruaud Larose
In a region where viticulture became established in Roman times, Chateau Gruaud-Larose is a relative newcomer among classified estates, having been founded in 1725. This estate is known for producing an earthy, leathery, densely packed wine that typically suggests an almost roasted ripeness. The wine can seem deceptively approachable early on owing to its sweet fruit, but the wine's major tannic clout generally calls for extended aging. Of the estate's 150 hectares, about 82 are planted to vineyards. The estate's second wine is called Sarget du Château Gruaud-Larose.

"For Sarget de Gruaud Larose, 2004 was a vintage of great purity, displaying overt cassis aromas on the nose and refined red fruit characteristics on the palate. The tannins and acidity are in perfect harmony with the fruit and the finish is long. Sarget is a very refined example of St Julien, never flashy but extremely rewarding and good value for money. Excellent with lamb and hard cheeses."
