Item Description
Fine Art Photography
Laurie McAndish King is an award-winning travel writer and photographer. Her work has appeared in Smithsonian magazine, Lonely Planet’s The Kindness of Strangers, Travelers’ Tales’ The Best Women’s Travel Writing 2009, and many other magazines and literary anthologies. Laurie also authored a five-star mobile app about the San Francisco Waterfront.
This photo of a tiny frog won first place in the Natural World category of Smithsonian’s 7th annual photo contest (2010), which drew more than 60,000 entries from around the world.
Although it evokes images of a lush tropical environment, the photo was taken in Mendocino County, California. I was experimenting with the sensuous shapes and colors of the Kalanchoe thyrsiflora plant when the frog popped into view. Because frogs around the world are increasingly endangered—up to half of the world's 6,000 amphibian species are in danger of extinction—the photo is an iconic representation of the precarious beauty of our world.
