Farmington was built between 1815 and 1816 for John and Lucy Fry Speed. In 1841, Abraham Lincoln visited this boyhood home of his closest friend, Joshua Speed, to recover from depression. For almost three weeks, the future president enjoy the luxurious lifestyle of the Speed Family. Lincoln's September 27, 1841 letter to Mary Speed, written soon after he left Farmington, contains his first written comment on enslaved African Americans.
